Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released its latest data for August 2022which shows that airline ticket sales made through CRA-accredited travel agencies totaled $7.3 billion last month, a 127% increase over the same period l last year.
Also in August, the average cost of a round-trip domestic flight in the United States fell for the third straight month, to $526. While the average price of a plane ticket decreased by 5% compared to July 2022, it was still 32% higher than in August 2021.
August 2022 monthly results:
— Total sales increased by 6%.
— The total number of passenger trips increased by 9%.
— Sales of domestic travel in the United States increased by 11%.
— International travel sales increased by 5%.
“Travellers have responded to lower airfares by buying plane tickets at a rate we don’t typically see at this time of year,” said Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer at ARC. “Leisure airline ticket sales exceeded pre-pandemic levels throughout August, while online travel agencies and business-focused travel agencies saw minor gains. “
Total CRA settled passenger air travel sales increased 43% year-over-year, from 15.2 million in August 2021 to 21.7 million in August 2022, and sales international travel increased by 74% to 7.4 million over the same period.
Meanwhile, Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD) sales – billed for products and services such as seat upgrades, checked baggage, unaccompanied minor and pet in-cabin fees, etc. – increased 116% from a year ago to $13.8 million, and EMD transactions increased 92 percent to 248,821 during the same period.
