Wed, 15 Sep 2021 17:35:29 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Former local council officials acquitted for 2008 travel ticket saga Wed, 15 Sep 2021 15:05:00 +0000

All of the former mayors and local councilors who were indicted in a 2008 expenditure fraud scandal have now been acquitted, after the other four defendants were acquitted on Wednesday morning.

They had been charged following an investigation by OLAF, the EU’s anti-fraud office, which discovered discrepancies in a large number of plane tickets, the price of which had been fully reimbursed by the EU, but had actually been purchased at a lower price than the price.

The court had been told that tickets issued by KD Travel Services Limited to the local council association and its members, who would also have private accounts with the same travel agency, would be billed alongside buyers who would then claim an amount. higher in the EU.

Former deputy mayor of Birkirkara Doris Borg, former mayor of Mellieha Joseph Borg; The mayor of San Lawrenz Noel Formosa, the former executive secretary of Fgura Oreste Alessandro, the former president of the association of local councils and former mayor of Kalkara Michael Cohen, the former municipal councilor of Qrendi Claudette Abela Baldacchino, l former LCA president and former Gzira town councilor Ian Micallef had been charged with several offenses, including fraud and embezzlement, after the investigation.

In a previous appeal procedure which ended in 2019, Kenneth Demartino, Noel Formosa and Ian Micallef, had been cleared of all charges.

In a judgment rendered on Wednesday by magistrate Josette Demicoli, Alessandro, Borg, Cohen and Abela Baldacchino were also acquitted.

Magistrate Demicoli stressed that the prosecution had not summoned representatives of local banks to testify on the accounts of the accused and that of the Association. “Although criminal intent has not been proven, that does not mean things were done right. But here, we are in the sphere of criminal law and it is only the evidence brought before the court that is evaluated ”, observed the magistrate.

Likewise, the accusations of embezzlement have not been proved either, as the sums paid by the Committee of the Regions were not paid under a title provided for by law.

On the falsification charges, the magistrate ruled that on the basis of the evidence, she could conclude that while it was true that the fact that the accused would transmit manual invoices and present them to the Committee of the Regions as proof of the ticket of plane purchases, could be assimilated to a complicity in falsification because the indicated price differed from that actually paid, it was not proven that this had been done knowingly.

Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Abdilla continued the case.

Lawyers Emmanuel Mallia, Ezekiel Psaila and Dustin Camilleri were the defense lawyers.

PennDOT Urges PSU Football Fans To Use Travel Information | News, Sports, Jobs Fri, 10 Sep 2021 05:05:32 +0000

Stadium parking plan.

PennDOT’s Central Region Traffic Management Center also supports Penn State’s football game days by posting real-time travel information on dynamic message boards and transmitting audio messages over radio systems from road warning to help travelers.

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State officials expect more than 100,000 fans when Penn State kicks off the home game of their program on Saturday against Ball State.

PennDOT encourages motorists heading to Penn State home football games to plan their trip using the real-time travel information at

511PA includes travel information for every Penn State home football game.

Throughout the season, travel information will be available from the Thursday before each home game until the following Monday.

The Penn State 511PA football page is dedicated to monitoring traffic conditions on major travel routes to the event. Travel times and alerts are provided for each parking zone: west zone (access via Atherton Street to Park Avenue); East Zone (access via US 322 / I-99 at Park Avenue); North Zone (access via Fox Hollow Road); and the South Zone (access via University Drive and Porter Road from College Avenue / US 26).

Users can view incidents, construction, weather forecasts and alerts, traffic cameras, and traffic speeds on the map. The page also includes the Beaver Stadium 2021 parking map.

PennDOT’s Central Region Traffic Management Center will also post real-time travel information on dynamic traffic signs and transmit audio messages over road warning radio systems.

Coach James Franklin has requested 107,000 sold-out seats for the first home game fans can attend since the end of the 2019 season.

“We expect a full house; we have a few thousand tickets left ”, Assistant Athletics Director Scott Sidwell said on Tuesday.

Traditional pre-game festivities are also back to include tailgating, team arrival and traffic patterns. However, fans will see changes. Most importantly for fans is that Penn State Athletics has fully converted to mobile tickets. Mobile ticket scanners and passage metal detectors have been added at each entry point. Fans are encouraged to upload their mobile tickets to their Apple Wallet or Google Pay before leaving for the game.

Several charging stations will be located in and around Beaver Stadium, as well as in external customer relations kiosks. The kiosks have charging units and adapters for iOS and Android devices.

Sidwell said mobile ticketing has become a trend in the industry.

“In 2019, we had 48%, we are not starting from scratch. Our big message is to download your tickets before you leave home. We will have assistants in the parking lot. We will be at the gates to make sure people come in ”, Sidwell said. “We learned a lot in Wisconsin last week, they were totally mobile, we’re excited about these things. We want the fans to understand that we are here to help.

Meanwhile, Gates E and F have been enlarged near the Beaver Stadium ticket office. The expansion will also improve fan circulation around the exterior of the stadium with extended walkways.

Match day traffic will revert to the 2019 plan.

One-way traffic will begin four hours before kick-off (11:30 a.m. for Saturday’s game) and 8:30 a.m. for noon games. New this year, daytime game parking can only be purchased (cash or credit) at the Innovation Park building.

The parking lots will open at 8 a.m. for the Saturday game.

“We ask people to come early”, Sidwll said.

One-way outgoing traffic is expected to end 60-90 minutes after the game. At the end of the one-way journey, fans will be able to leave their field and exit the stadium area by any route.

PennDOT said fans coming to the game should be aware of some construction in the area.

On I-80, night work on the local interchange / Route 26 project at Bellefonte / 161 began on Tuesday. This work may require the contractor to close the right (traffic) lane in some cases. In these cases, all westbound traffic will use the temporary crossing.

PennDOT does not expect the new traffic model to cause significant travel delays.

On Route 322 westbound near Philipsburg, traffic is reduced to one lane as crews construct a one-mile center turn lane between Decatur Hill / Graham Station Road and Route 53. This construction creates a hazard. traffic congestion.

Technology keeps traditional travel agency afloat and spurs launch of real-time booking platform for cruises Tue, 07 Sep 2021 09:30:02 +0000

Training staff to work with technology and investing in digitization have helped a traditional travel agency weather the wave of layoffs and closures that hit Hong Kong’s tourism sector during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Goldjoy Travel became the first travel agency in Asia to launch a real-time booking platform for cruises with two of Genting Hong Kong’s lines – Dream Cruises and Crystal Cruises.

Frederick Yip, executive director of Goldjoy Group, said its proprietary platform, called ‘Direct Connect’, would replace the tedious process of using chain emails, phone calls and data spreadsheets to buy. cruise tickets.

“In the past, agents had to use a spreadsheet and book cabins for the customer and manually enter them into the system with the cruise line,” Yip said in an interview with the To post.

It took two years for the travel agency set up by Yip’s father to develop the platform, which aimed to capitalize on the Asian cruise market, including customers from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan. and India.

Yip said the redesign could help attract customers younger than their 30s, with an interface tailored to their needs. He said the average age of cruise passengers in Hong Kong was 54, while that of Asia was around 45.

Hong Kong’s tourism industry has been going through a rough patch amid border closures during the pandemic.

Hong Kong ‘cruise to nowhere’ operator to push for higher onboard capacity

According to data from the Travel Industry Council, the number of travel agents fell to 1,666 operators in September, from around 1,900 in 2019. Many have laid off staff to cut costs or shut down.

The unemployment rate in the consumer and tourism sectors, including retail, accommodation and food services, peaked at 11.3% in the rolling three-month period from July to September. The overall unemployment rate was 6.3 percent during this period.

But Goldjoy has managed to keep most of his team during the pandemic, according to Yip, while training his staff to work with new technologies, like putting travel agents to operate the 24/7 live chatbot. of the platform to meet customer demands.

“We combine traditional business with customer service. We hope to bring the skills of physical operations to the online world, ”he said.

Cruise to Nowhere Company Plans to Host Hong Kong Wine and Food Exhibition at Sea

The company has also launched a partnership with ride-sharing company Uber Hong Kong. Cruise passengers returning to port at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Cruise Terminal or International Airport can then enjoy free rides home.

Tourism lawmaker Yiu Si-wing said the industry has already had the worst shutdown among travel agents, adding that those who survived have tried to cut costs or scale their operations.

“Most of the still active travel agents have put their staff on long-term unpaid leave, allowing workers to take part-time jobs and return once travel returns to normal. Others moved to smaller offices and focused on conducting local tours or green tours around Hong Kong, ”Yiu said.

“Cruises to Nowhere” officially left Hong Kong on July 30, with Genting Cruise Lines the only operator for those trips that do not have a port of call. All passengers and crew must be fully vaccinated and tested for Covid-19 before departure.

The Royal Caribbean Cruises cruise liner is also expected to start offering services in October.

Hong Kong Travel Agents’ Relief Alliance head Perry Yiu Pak-leung said cruises to nowhere were popular with customers and hoped travel agencies could use online platforms to sell packages.

“The first month of the Cruise to Nowhere program has run out and has given travel agents work to redo,” said Perry Yiu, who had lobbied for the project, adding that travel agencies at the old had gotten into the habit of upgrading their social media. online accounts and reservation systems during the pandemic.

He said more than 300 small operators have been funded through the Travel Industry Council’s IT matching fund program, which subsidizes each approved project up to 50% of its total cost or HK $ 100,000 (US $ 12,860 ), whichever is lower.

Mammootty anniversary: travel agency announces free tourist visas to Dubai for 70 fans – News Tue, 07 Sep 2021 09:23:48 +0000

Dubai-based travel agency is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the birthday of Kerala’s megastar, Mammootty. Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail – better known by his stage name Mammootty – turned 70 on Tuesday, September 7.

As many Kerala expats in the UAE have taken to social media to share their best wishes to the Indian actor, a Dubai-based travel agency has decided to raise the bar.

Smart Travels LLC is giving 70 Mammootty fans who are celebrating their 70th birthday this year a free one-month tourist visa. The visa includes one month of free travel insurance, Afi Ahmad, managing director of Smart Travels, told the Khaleej Times.

“I have been a longtime Mammukka fan. He turned 70 this year and his vitality has not weakened. The way he has maintained his fitness and health is a great inspiration to many of us, ”said Ahmed.

Over a career spanning four decades, Mammootty has appeared in over 400 films, primarily in Malayalam, including several in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English. Recently he was awarded the UAE Golden Visa with Kerala Superstar Mohanlal.

Ahmad explained, “We are offering 70 free tourist visas, including insurance costs, to 70 fans of the Indian megastar. They are expected to turn 70 this year, according to the date on their passport. The visa costs 320 Dh, including insurance, which Smart Travels will offer free of charge.

“The service is offered on a first come, first served basis. The first 70 tourists who apply before 5 pm GST tomorrow (Wednesday September 8) will benefit from the free service, ”he said. Travel costs to Dubai – which include airfare, RT-PCR and rapid PCR tests – will need to be borne by the traveler.

After months of tight travel restrictions between India and the United Arab Emirates, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority relaxed the rules for travelers arriving from the South Asian country to Dubai last week.

“The demand for travelers from India has exploded in recent days. Many Indian tourists come to Dubai, especially to reunite with their families and attend Expo 2020, ”Ahmed said.

“Dubai is a home from home for superstars like Mammootty. Indians who are 70 years old generally feel old and cannot travel. Instead, they should take inspiration from Mammootty and live their lives to the fullest, ”he added.

Vietnam Airlines is testing a travel pass Mon, 06 Sep 2021 23:15:50 +0000

HANOI, September 7, 2021: Vietnam Airlines is testing the IATA Travel Pass on flights departing from Hanoi with 18 passengers on each flight participating in the pilot project, the Vietnamese News Agency reported.

The International Air Transport Association Travel Pass has been tested by various airlines since May.

The travel pass integrates cutting-edge digital solutions such as contactless air travel, biometric data and online health certificates with Covid-19 test results and proof of vaccination. Simpler, verification digitizes the process and is more passenger-friendly than having to obtain paper certification from the authorities.

With a quick and simple procedure, the pass is expected to facilitate safe and easy travel between countries and reduce one of the main problems for passengers resuming international travel.

After a test on a flight to Europe last week, Vietnam Airlines will continue the pilot project on flights from Hanoi to Seoul on September 12; in London on September 21, then on flights to Tokyo.

“To avoid any problems when filing the tax books, we have decided to give Amit ji the friendly appearance credits.” He added: “Monsieur was so professional and committed that he also put his own money into commuting.”

Director of the film, Rumi Jafry himself praised the main actors Amitabh Bachchand and Emraan Hashmi. The film also stars Rhea Chakraborty and Krystle D Souza in leading roles.

“After we finalized Amitabh Bachchan for Chehre, we started looking for other actors. I was looking for the second lead role and Emraan was a perfect fit for the character I had imagined. Even though I had never worked with him before, j “Had heard a lot about him in the industry. He really is like Amit Ji when it comes to professionalism – dedicated, hardworking and doesn’t allow anything to interfere with his work,” said Rumi.
