21% month-over-month total sales increase in international passenger travel
ARLINGTON, Virginia, November 18, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) – Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released data showing that airline ticket sales of ARC-accredited travel agencies increased 199% year-over-year in October 2021. The consolidated dollar value of tickets sold by agencies in October amounted to $ 4.3. billion dollars, the third month in 2021 for which sales topped $ 4 billion. *
Month after month, the results for October 2021 showed:
Total sales up 33%.
The total number of passenger trips increased by 14%.
Domestic travel to the United States increased 11%.
International travel increased by 21%.
“The announcement that the United States would open its borders to vaccinated international travelers on November 8 led to a significant increase in airline ticket purchases throughout October,” said Steve Solomon, vice president of global sales, marketing, operations and customer experience at ARC. “We have seen a double-digit percentage increase in new tickets from European countries to the United States, a positive sign for the travel industry as we move into the holiday months.”
Total passenger trips settled by the CRA in October 2021 increased 115% year-over-year, from 8.1 million to 17.6 million. Domestic passenger travel in the United States increased 112% to 12.1 million year over year. International passenger travel increased 123% to 5.4 million during the same period. The average price for round-trip tickets to the United States in October 2021 was $ 425, a 13% increase from $ 377 in October 2020.
Year over year, EMD sales in October 2021 increased 157% to $ 7,861,025. EMD transactions increased 146% to 163,212. **

The results are based on monthly sales data ending October 31, 2021, from 10,897 retail and corporate travel agencies in the United States, satellite ticket printing offices and travel agencies in line. Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.
Average ticket price (USD) is for a round-trip ticket paid through the ARC for an itinerary that included only domestic travel within the United States.
Passenger trips include the total number of passengers making a trip from one airport to another using direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and reimbursed trips are deducted to provide a clear view of the passengers traveling.
Domestic passenger trips within the United States include the total number settled by the CRA when the itinerary is entirely within the United States International passenger trips include the total number settled by the CRA where part or all of the trip takes place to airports outside the United States or originates from outside the United States
Total sales equals the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.
